Assignment 4: How to Make a Chinese Meal

Documented lesson plan for our multimedia project:

Lesson Plan:  

This course will introduce the step of a classical Chinese meal. It will include one main dish and two side dishes as examples to give students an understanding of Chinese food culture.

Menu:

•-Beijing Bean Sauce Fried Noodles

•-Spicy and sour chicken feet

•-Mapo Tofu

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

•Remember the order of each step

•Know the spices needed for each dish

•Know the amount of spices to use

•Able to try three dishes on their own

Design Process:

Before we started the project, we had thought about lots of dishes. We want to introduce some dishes that are not too hard and could represent Chinese food culture. We think spicy food is the most popular food in China. Therefore, we choose these three dishes.

Multimedia Content:

We create a slide first. The slide includes the course plan, learning outcomes, and all the step of the meal. 

Multimedia Principle and learning theories:

Coherence principle: We keep all the words simple and short. And the introduction follows the step-by-step process that starts with the preparation of ingredients. We didn’t narrative our slide because we think when people are trying to learn a new dish, the narrative will divert their attention from the slide. So, there is no extra cognitive load when learners review the slide. 

Contiguity principle: We put the ingredient photo and the dish photo in the slide. Some ingredients and sauce make people confuse. So the photo lets learners know what the ingredient looks like. All the photo is relevant with each dishes and near each other. 

Segmenting principle: We break the ingredient the procedure into the different page that learners could stop and remember the information. 

Worked Example principle: All the photos are taken by ourselves.

Also, we record the process of cooking. All the step are indicated clear.

Multimedia Principle and learning theories:

Our videos can teach you to step by step how to cook. The videos are complete following multimedia principles in order to achieve our learning outcomes.

Signaling Principle – there are clear signals in the video to let the learner know if they are moving on to the next topic. We use different transitions and eye-catching text to remind learners of each topic.

The Spatial Contiguity Principle – learners can easily process information when text and images are presented together. Learners can easily remember how to perform each step.

The Coherence Principle – The video is free of extraneous material so that the learner learns more effectively. We have not added music to the video as a background sound, since we feel that the simpler the visual and auditory effects, the better the attention span of the students.

Worked Example Principle – In the video, we cook the meal by ourselves to show the procedure. This includes clips of the cooking used in the video as well as pictures of the actual operation.

In this assignment, I select to improved my Google Earth story.

I add few things to the Google Earth story. First, I add a link about the Great Wall in the slide. There are lots of information about the Great Wall. I add the landmark of the ticket office on the map. And select the best view in Google Earth. Also, I improved the route of the Great Wall on the map. Based on my understanding of the multimedia principle, I think my origin story is too simple and there isn’t much information about the Great Wall. Therefore, based on the Dual Coding theory, multimedia principle, and coherence principle, I add the photo and the website to make the story be more interesting. The website could let people know more about the Great Wall. Also, the landmark and the photo of the ticket office follow the signaling principle. The viewer could find it easily when they go to the Great Wall. Therefore, I think my update is effective.

First of all, I really like the TED video which you choose. It is a nice topic. Meanwhile, your analysis of the TED video is nice and in detail. You point the advantage and disadvantages of the video and explain your idea. You have an excellent understanding of the multimedia learning principle and cognitive coding theory. Finally, I wonder if maybe you could improve your analysis of dual coding theory. For example, gives more explanation about why it does not meet the criteria.

I really like the explanation of the signaling principle and the segmenting principle. You explain the principle in detail and give an example of them. Your Twine story is very interesting and follows the multimedia learning principle “keep it short and simple”. Finally, I wonder if maybe you can explain more about Twine story is more convenient than PPT, not only in a history class.

Overall, this is an excellent analysis of the Twine story.

Sketchnoting

This is my Bad News score.

The game follows the coherence principle. There is some picture that relates to the words. The game doesn’t follow the segmenting principle. In my opinion, some sections are too long and too many words to read. If I could improve this game, I will make the game be shorter.

This is my sketchnote.

The sketchnote relates to the coherence principle, signaling principle, contiguity principle, and segmenting principle. I think sketchnote is very helpful to me. When we taking notes in class or for an article, we need summary the most important concept. Especially in class, we might not able to follow the professor if we write down all the words. Therefore, sketchnote could help us highlight the knowledge. We are using hands-on skill-building, discussion, and reflective blogging in EDCI 337.

Twine Story

My Twine Story

Two Multimedia Principles that directly relate to my Twine story:

  • coherence principle
  • signaling principle

First, there are not extra pictures or words that unrelated to my story. The reader could clearly read and understand my story. Second, I add a highlight title at the end of each passage. It gives the reader a hint of what will happen next. I use these two principles to make the story be simple and short.

In my opinion, the Twine story is very nice for educational purposes. As we know, only text or words will make the lesson be boring and exhausted. The Twine story could add lots of multimedia elements. This is will make the lesson be interesting. For example, the economic instructor could combine the theory and graphs that use the Twine story. I believe it will be better than only theory.

Core Multimedia Skills

This is the multimedia object which I improved. I choose “Magic Tiles” because I think this game could train people’s brains. I add an interactive question to the H5P and I cut out the advertisements in the game to make the video be more effective. Based on the topic we have covered, I could summarize few reasons why this multimedia object is effective. First of all,  this video is simple and short. This is related to the multimedia principle. Making the video be short and simple directly show the rule of the game and how to play the game. It will not cost people lots of time. In addition, as the Dual Coding theory emphasized, the video is more interesting and memorable than just the rules with words. It is very important that use visuals and sound together in a lesson. Third, I did not add my voice in the video because I think the outside voices will affect the learner’s thinking when they are watching a video of the game. At least for my own, I don’t like to listen to the rule if I could watch a sample video. Too much voice will increase the learner’s cognitive load. Fourth, as the SECTIONS model explains, no cost of a video is better. Therefore, I think this multimedia object is effective in increasing knowledge.

Her interactive video is very nice. She keeps the video short and easy. It is very useful and easy to follow it. I like it!  Also, I agree with her opinion about why multimedia lesson plans are important. She has nice explanations and examples about her opinion. I wonder if, there are some negative effects of interactive video?

I like the explanation of the primary thoughts about multimedia learning and how the thought changes now. I agree that Zoom and Brightspace is a nice application of synchronous teaching. I wonder if, there could add images of face-to-face and online communication? Two images could compare the difference of teaching methods directly and clearly.
